What is UPSC?
UPSC is the highest direct recruitment conducting body in India. It is a constitutional body and derives its powers from Article 315 of the constitution of India. The UPSC has its root in the colonial Federal Public Service Commission constituted under the Government of India Act 1935.
The Federal Public Service Commission was the successor of the first Public Service Commission established on October 1, 1926, under the chairmanship of Ross Barker.
The primary duty of the UPSC is to conduct the recruitment exam for the Union Government and be consulted by the President of India whenever asked in specific matters. The UPSC conducts the examination for the Civil Services and Civil posts. At the request of the State Governor, it can also conduct the recruitment exams for them but with prior approval of the President of India.
